Turkey cannot give up on Russian gas and ties with Putin - Erdogan

Turkey cannot refuse natural gas supplies from Russia. Also, the authorities do not intend to sever ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. A statement by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, quoted by Hurriyet, said this.

"Regarding the war with Russia and Ukraine, of course, we are now pursuing a balanced policy with regard to both Russia and Ukraine. And in this policy of balance, of course, I do not intend to sever ties with Mr. Putin, or Mr. Zelensky," Erdogan said.

He noted that he continues his phone conversations with both the president of Ukraine and the president of Russia.

"Turkey will continue this work because starting a new world war will not benefit our region or the world. However, we have ties with both sides. With Russia we have the Akkuyu nuclear power project. Hopefully, within the next year we will complete it and open it. Again, where do we get 50% of the natural gas we currently use? We get it from Russia. This is a strategically important relationship for us. And we cannot break off this relationship," Erdogan stressed.

In turn, he also added that Turkey also has many partnerships with Ukraine in the field of food and intends to continue them in the future.
