European Commission has decided how transit to Kaliningrad will pass through Lithuania - Media

The European Commission is preparing to submit an explanatory document on the mechanism of movement of subsanctioned goods from Russia to Kaliningrad through the EU territory in the near future.

This was reported by the Lithuanian portal TV3, citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the European Commission will determine that goods will be sent to Kaliningrad through the territory of Lithuania, but Lithuania will control the amount of goods so that Russia will not use transit to bypass sanctions and export its goods to third countries.

Sources say that this week the European Commission is preparing to provide the Lithuanian authorities with a specific document and explanations for the implementation of EU sanctions against Russia with specific details.

It is also reported that Lithuania will have to prepare legislation on how to calculate quotas and stop transit if they are exceeded.

These recommendations were to be expected because the purpose of the EU sanctions was to prevent the import of certain goods from Russia or the transit of goods for sales to third countries, but they were not intended to disrupt the transportation of goods between different parts of Russia.

Recall that after the ban on the transit of new types of Russian goods to Kaliningrad came into force on July 10, Lithuania in the first day did not let 34 trucks through.

Since Sunday, after the end of the transition period of the fifth package of the EU sanctions against Russia, it's been prohibited to transport cement, alcohol, wood, glass, aluminum, paper products, gypsum and other goods of Russian origin through Lithuania. Earlier, Lithuania restricted the transit of steel and ferrous metals to the Kaliningrad region due to the EU sanctions.
