Lithuania will not agree to "green corridors" for transit to Kaliningrad

Lithuania and the European Commission are jointly coordinating the text of clarifications on the application of EU sanctions on the transit of goods to the Kaliningrad region of Russia. Lithuanian presidential foreign policy advisor Asta Skaisgiritė stated this in an interview with LRT.

"Lithuanian diplomats in Brussels are communicating with representatives of the European Commission, they want to agree on a text that would be acceptable to both Lithuania and the EC, and this is good. It is not a case where the EC simply gives instructions and we (carry out) them," she said.

The official named several principles adhered to by Lithuania in the negotiations: the rules must apply not only to Lithuania, but also to other transit countries, transit control must be maintained and there can be no "green corridors."

"So far, Lithuania has adhered to the policy that the transit of subsanctioned goods must be prohibited and controlled. The moment of control must be preserved, and when someone talks about "green corridors" in a public space, there can be no idea that Lithuania does not control what happens on its territory, where and why," Skaisgiritė stressed.

Recall that Lithuania has restricted the transit of steel and ferrous metals to the Kaliningrad region, citing a clarification from the EU. Moscow said the transit restrictions violate international agreements and threatened to retaliate.
