The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan said that the country may take a course to join the EU and obtain candidate status. He said this during a conversation with journalists, Radio Azatutyun reports.
In response to a question about whether Armenia is ready to deepen relations with the EU and whether it can set a goal of candidate status, Simonyan said that such a possibility is worth considering.
"We are ready to move and will move in the direction that will provide us with the greatest security. And now the fact that we are a democratic country is an important component of our security. We are not discussing the issue of changing the vector, we are discussing what to do to reduce the dangers that may threaten the Republic of Armenia," Simonyan said.
He added that Yerevan has no decision to withdraw from the CSTO. Also, the Armenian authorities are not discussing the withdrawal of the Russian 102nd military base from the country and are not considering NATO membership.
