Ukraine plans to produce or purchase 100 new high-voltage transformers to replace those destroyed by Russian shelling last year. This was reported by The Economist.
"100 new high-voltage transformers have been ordered, half of which will be produced domestically and half purchased abroad. But attacks on Ukrainian factories have led to the fact that several domestic transformers have actually been made in Poland and Romania until they are needed," the article says.
Ukraine's Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko noted that the country is preparing for new possible attacks on its energy system, but it is much more vulnerable than last year, as it no longer has excess capacity and there is little spare equipment.
At the same time, Ukrainian engineers have reportedly developed sophisticated schemes to distribute electricity and equipment in the country.
In addition, after modernization, Ukraine has many old but only recently decommissioned transformers that can be reconnected if necessary.
Galushchenko noted that Ukraine now has a lot of experience in dealing with large-scale attacks. But the Russians could also learn lessons from their experience of "not being able to destroy the system." He emphasized that Ukraine needs more air defense systems.
