Ukrainians are proposed to be punished for obtaining a passport of the Russian Federation during the occupation

In Ukraine, it is proposed to introduce criminal liability for obtaining Russian citizenship during the occupation and forced passporting. This was announced by the representative of the Cabinet of Ministers in the Verkhovna Rada Taras Melnychuk in Telegram.

 The relevant draft law No. 8057 was developed by the government and has already been registered in the parliament. The document is aimed at countering forced passporting of Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories.

 The Cabinet of Ministers proposes to introduce criminal liability for:

 obtaining a Russian passport by Ukrainians, as well as representatives of local self-government and other state bodies;

 forced passporting of the population and restrictions on the rights and opportunities of Ukrainians who do not wish to obtain Russian citizenship;

 propaganda and public appeals about the need to obtain a Russian passport.

 Passporting crimes will be investigated by the SBU, and the investigation may be conducted in absentia.

 The government also wants to clarify the conditions that are not grounds for losing Ukrainian citizenship:

 forced automatic acquisition of Russian citizenship by Ukrainians living in the temporarily occupied territory;

 if the rights and freedoms of Ukrainians are limited without a Russian passport;

 acquisition of Russian citizenship by deportees near the Russian Federation.
