Orban suggested EU to postpone the issue of Ukraine's membership for 5-10 years

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine's accession to the European Union "should not be on the agenda". According to the politician, the EU should first conclude a strategic partnership agreement with Ukraine for 5-10 years, and only then return to the issue of membership negotiations. He said this on Kossuth Radio.

According to Orban, Ukraine's membership in the EU "does not coincide with Hungary's national interests today." He also believes that there is no consensus in the bloc on this issue, so the topic should not even be put on the agenda.

The main obstacle to Ukraine's accession, the Hungarian prime minister said, is the war: "Ukraine is at war, so its legal system is different. We don't know how big its territory is, how big its population is, because its people are constantly fleeing."

Instead of negotiating membership, Orban proposes to conclude a strategic partnership agreement with Ukraine for 5-10 years, and when "we see that we can cooperate," return to the issue of negotiations.

He also said that European economies are in a bad state, while the EU is "throwing money at Ukraine."

"We have given Ukraine a lot of money, and that is why European economies are in a bad state. The EU is sending money by the wagons to Ukraine so that the Ukrainian army can win on the front line. But it is not winning, and I am not sure that if we send more money, it will win. Let's spend money not on war, but on peace and a ceasefire. The second question is: if we want to give money, where do we give it from? From the EU budget or from a separate fund to be created by an intergovernmental agreement? I support the latter," Orban said.
