The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament has publicly supported the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. This was stated by President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola during a joint press conference with Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk in Brussels.
Metsola expressed support for the start of negotiations with Ukraine, noting the country's efforts to implement the necessary reforms. The Conference of Presidents, which includes the leadership of the European Parliament and political groups, expressed confidence that Ukraine has demonstrated its readiness for accession talks.
The President of the European Parliament also emphasized that the process of joining the EU for Ukraine is not only about adopting European norms and laws, but also requires significant changes in the country's society.
The Conference of Presidents expressed confidence that Ukraine will continue to implement the reforms necessary to fulfill the recommendations of the European Commission in order to start membership negotiations as soon as possible, which may be decided in the near future.
In addition, Metsola posted on social media X that she and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, had signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding between the Verkhovna Rada and the European Parliament.
