A meeting of the European part of the Parliamentary Committee of the Ukraine-EU Association took place in Brussels. The issue of fulfilling the conditions for granting the status of a candidate for accession to the Union was raised. This was reported by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.
The meeting was attended by members of the Verkhovna Rada and their colleagues from the European Parliament. The parties discussed:
- Ukraine's progress in fulfilling the seven conditions for granting candidate status for EU membership;
- EU support for Ukraine in the context of numerous crises and the global security environment.
According to Vadym Halaychuk, Co-Chairman of the Parliamentary Association Committee on the Ukrainian side, Ukraine's progress in fulfilling the conditions for the candidate status is significant.
"We realize that after the European Commission's report on enlargement we will face additional challenges. Therefore, we agreed that after the report is made public, we will hold a meeting of the Association Parliamentary Committee to discuss how we can change and adapt our work to meet these tasks and challenges," said Halaychuk.
He also added that Ukraine has almost fulfilled all the requirements and some bilateral issues still remain, including, for example, the issue of national minorities.
For her part, Inna Sovsun, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian section of the APC, called on her European colleagues to remember the price of freedom and democratic values, in particular to work on sanctions against Russia.
"Daniel Szeligowski, Head of the Eastern European Program and Senior Research Fellow for Ukraine at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, noted that Russia's war in Ukraine is not a war for territory. It is a war to destroy the state of Ukraine. Therefore, any territorial concessions will not appease Russia in any way. I am sure that Russia is preparing for a long war in Ukraine, so the unity of the United States and the EU in supporting Ukraine is more important than ever," the press service adds.
