Ukraine may remain without pilots and F-16 fighters for another year

Ukraine may be without F-16 pilots for another year, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The first group of six Ukrainian pilots is not expected to complete training on American F-16 fighters until next summer. This was reported by anonymous sources, some of whom are Ukrainian and American officials. Six pilots have been selected for the first round of training, and two more are reserve candidates.

The training involves four months of English language courses in the UK, where the pilots will learn jet fighter terminology. This will also take place alongside ground personnel who may have less English language skills. Denmark reportedly initially tried to focus on training entire crews, but the Danish Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the matter.

After completing the training, the Ukrainian pilots will prepare for combat deployment within six months, with a second group of roughly the same size ready by the end of next year. Ukrainian officials note that this is a delay, but try to avoid criticizing their American and European colleagues for fear of appearing ungrateful.
