A fire has broken out at what is described as Europe’s largest oil storage facility in the Russian city of Samara following a series of overnight explosions.
According to ASTRA, the Samara Linear Production and Dispatch Station was likely targeted during the night of October 2. The facility is part of Russia’s Transneft pipeline system and reportedly contains the largest oil tank farm in Europe. ASTRA said it reached the conclusion after analysing open-source data.
The Samara oil facility covers more than 216 hectares and contains 71 storage tanks with a combined capacity of more than 1.6 million cubic metres of oil.
The complex also includes two oil pumping stations, Samara-1 and Samara-2, as well as a separate facility where different grades of crude oil are blended.
Four major oil pipelines converge at the site: Almetyevsk–Samara, Kaltasy–Samara, Nizhnevartovsk–Kurgan–Samara and Atyrau–Samara (Guryev).
The facility receives oil from Western Siberia, Tatarstan, the Orenburg region and Kazakhstan.
