The number of German troops in Lithuania as part of the NATO mission will be increased from 1,000 to 1,500.

This is reported by Reuters, citing government sources.

According to the agency, Berlin will also allocate one combat-ready brigade of about 3,000 people, which can be quickly redeployed to defend Lithuania in case of need.

Germany now leads a multinational battalion in Lithuania with about 1,000 men.

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a visit to Lithuania, announced his intention to expand the battalion to brigade size in the long term.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, meanwhile, said the brigade would be established in no more than a year and a half.

The Baltic states are now expecting additional troops from Canada and Great Britain, which lead similar NATO units in Latvia and Estonia, Nausseda told reporters.
