Germany's air defense initiative for Ukraine has failed - Politico

Berlin's initiative to provide air defense for Ukraine has failed. Although Germany has promised Ukraine air defense systems and enlisted the support of its allies, remains the only country that has taken concrete steps in this direction. This was reported by Politico.

Berlin tried to help Ukraine by promising to transfer 3 of its Patriot systems, and for a month it persuaded its allies to follow suit. But “almost no one” responded.

Spain, Greece and Poland refused. Romania promised to think about it. Switzerland has ordered five new units, but has not mentioned any plans to transfer anything to Ukraine.

“There is no European leadership and no unity among the main actors. The sense of urgency has not increased, rather, there is a sense of relief that the Americans are once again fulfilling their commitments,” said Nico Lange, former chief of staff of the German Defense Ministry and now a researcher at the CEPA think tank.

Experts say that one of the reasons for the reluctance of Western countries to send Ukraine Patriot is their high cost - about a billion dollars for the system and millions for each missile. Also, countries do not want to weaken their own air defense, as the production of new Patriots takes a long time.
