Croatia's Adriatic ports may provide an alternative route for transporting grain from Ukraine, whose Black Sea ports remain blocked.

This was announced by Croatian Foreign Ministry State Secretary Andreja Metelko Zgombić, Jutarnji List reported.

Zgombic attended a meeting of the EU Council on General Affairs, where food security and energy were discussed.

"During the discussion, I drew attention to the fact that Croatian ports on the Adriatic are accessible and that they can be an efficient and short route to North Africa," she said.

Ten days ago, the European Commission unveiled an action plan to create "solidarity lanes" for exports of grain and other agricultural products by land from Ukraine, whose ports have been blocked since the Russian invasion.

Before the Russian invasion, 90 percent of grain and oilseed exports passed through Ukrainian Black Sea ports.

Because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and blockade of its ports, grains and other agricultural products cannot be exported, posing a global food threat. A third of Ukraine's exports go to Africa, which could starve.

Huge quantities of grain need to be brought into the EU by land and then shipped from seaports to Africa.
