Hungary: Kiev's position on minority rights limits any support for the conflict

If the Ukrainians do not retreat from their policy toward the Hungarian minority, it will greatly limit the Hungarian government's ability to provide any support to Kiev in the conflict with Russia.

According to European Pravda, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said this in an interview with the pro-government Magyar Nemzet.

"I honestly told my EU and NATO colleagues that if the Ukrainians do not back down from this policy, it will seriously limit the Hungarian government's ability to provide any support to Ukraine, including in the case of conflict," Szijjártó said.

The foreign minister said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after a phone conversation with Prime Minister Viktor Orban late last year, "outlined the future of bilateral relations very positively and then introduced a bill in the Ukrainian parliament saying that dual citizenship does not qualify for public office."

"This means that he wants to almost completely exclude Hungarians from belonging to national communities. To give another example: the Ukrainians asked us to help supply gas to Ukraine through Hungary. We said yes to this; in the first three months of the year it was possible to transport 700 million cubic meters of gas to Ukraine through Hungary, which is one of the most significant imports from the West. At the same time, there has been no progress in the issues concerning the Hungarian national community," the minister said.

Earlier Szijjártó said that Hungary is dissatisfied with the situation with the rights of ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine and therefore will continue to block Kiev's Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

As is known, Hungary has long blocked Ukraine's integration into NATO because of the language law, which deprives ethnic Hungarians of the right to study in their native language in high schools.
