Kyiv: The return of the US to the Open Skies Treaty is possible only if Russia allows reconnaissance flights over the Kaliningrad region and near the border with Georgia, thereby fulfilling the terms of the Treaty.
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, according to the official website of the Alliance.
“The Allies called on Russia to return to full compliance with the Treaty during the 2014 Wales summit and reiterated this call at the Warsaw summit in 2016 and again at the summit in Brussels in 2018. The United States has accused Russia of violating the Treaty, and has now announced its intention to withdraw from the Treaty within six months in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty. The US said it could reconsider its conclusion if Russia returns to full compliance with the Treaty,” he emphasized.
US President Donald Trump said that Washington would withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty if Russia does not fulfill its obligations. Later, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russia of using the Treaty for personal purposes.
