Kyiv: Former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig, who is now in custody in China, will not be able to take advantage of diplomatic immunity. This was announced by the press center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.
“Michael Kovrig, who is in China on suspicion of threatening the country's national security, will not be able to take advantage of his diplomatic immunity,” said Hua Chunin, spokesman for the ministry, at a recent briefing in Beijing.
It is known that Kovrig was one of two Canadians detained in China a few days after his arrest on December 1 of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co., in Vancouver at the request of the United States.
We recall that US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo called on official representatives of the PRC to release two Canadian citizens and called their detention “unacceptable”.
