Belgian Prime Minister resigns after losing election

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo resigns. The reason was the loss of his party in the national elections. This is reported by Politico.

De Croo said he would resign on the morning of Monday, June 10, after his center-right party, the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats, lost a significant number of votes in the national elections held on Sunday, June 9.

According to exit polls, the Open VLD gained 5.7%, which is 2.8 percentage points less than in 2019.

“It was a particularly difficult evening for us, we lost. From tomorrow I will be the resigning prime minister,” he told his supporters at a rally.

At the same time, De Croo will remain as interim prime minister until a new government is formed.

“I am convinced that we need a new government as soon as possible, with full powers. The voter’s signal is clear,” he added.

Tom Ongena, president of the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats party, also announced his intention to resign.

It should be noted that Belgium currently holds the presidency of the European Union.
