Romania has begun construction of Europe's largest NATO base, which can accommodate up to 10,000 military personnel and their families. This was reported by Euronews.
Experts believe that this is due to the war in Ukraine, which may last for several more years.
The facility is being built on an area of almost three thousand hectares in the Constanta district (a Romanian port on the Black Sea), on the basis of the existing NATO Air Base Mihail Kogălniceanu.
The €2.5 billion project includes runways, weapons platforms, hangars for military aircraft, as well as schools, kindergartens, shops, and a hospital.
"The base will be NATO's most important permanent military structure in the immediate vicinity of the conflict in the south of Ukraine. Let's not imagine that this conflict will end in 2025 or 2026, this is a long-term conflict," said Romanian expert Dorin Popescu.
