The Russian Federation has the world's largest stockpile of nuclear warheads. Their number is about 5580 units. This is reported by Reuters.
Among the 5,580 nuclear warheads, 1,200 are decommissioned but mostly intact, and 4,380 are stored for use by long-range strategic missiles and shorter-range tactical nuclear forces.
Russia has deployed about 1,710 strategic warheads, of which about 870 are deployed on land-based ballistic missiles, approximately 640 on submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and perhaps 200 on heavy bomber bases.
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union had a peak number of nuclear warheads of about 40,000, while the United States had about 30,000.
