Approval of Ukraine's EU accession negotiation framework may be delayed - Politico

Politico notes that on March 12, the European Commission will present a negotiation framework for Ukraine's accession to the EU, but its approval may be delayed for several more months.

On March 12, the European Commission is to propose the so-called negotiation framework for Ukraine and Moldova - documents that define the general principles of future accession negotiations. After that, they must be discussed and agreed upon by the member states.

"European diplomats and officials warn that agreement from all 27 European capitals, which is necessary to formally start negotiations, is unlikely before the European elections in June," Politico notes.

Among other things, some countries want Ukraine and Moldova not to get ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the path to the EU.

According to the publication's sources, on March 12, the European Commission will give a positive recommendation to start accession talks with BiH, and next week at a meeting in Brussels, EU leaders will discuss this recommendation.

The European Commission is also expected to present a document on how the EU is preparing for future enlargement. It was initially expected in late February, but now, according to Politico, the presentation has been postponed until March 20.

Earlier, we reported that the European Commission should decide on the presentation of the negotiation framework for Ukraine's accession to the EU by March 14. This was stated by the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna during the event "Fighting Corruption in Ukraine: Progress Towards EU Membership".
