French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a joint press conference after the closed part of bilateral talks on April 6. This was reported by the France 24 TV channel.
The head of the People's Republic of China said that he is in favor of a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine. He also called on the international community to "restrain" to prevent "the situation from getting out of control."
"As for the Ukrainian crisis, we are ready for reasonable and controlled cooperation with France to avoid worsening the situation," Xi Jinping said, as quoted by TF1.
He emphasized that he hoped for a political solution to the issue through negotiations.
"We have to pay attention to specific issues in order to preserve European security borders," Xi Jinping said.
He also confirmed his disagreement with the use of nuclear weapons, as well as with the bombing of power plants.
Macron, for his part, said that lasting peace "cannot be achieved without respect for the Ukrainian people, who were attacked." The French president emphasized that "there should be a gesture from Russia" towards Ukraine, since the Russians "attacked".
Negotiations between the President of France and the President of the People's Republic of China are taking place in the People's Palace in Beijing.
After the talks between Macron and Xi Jinping, another meeting will take place, already in a trilateral format. They will be joined by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Recall that Macron arrived in China on April 5. His visit will last until April 7. The President of the European Commission came with him. Von der Leyen noted that an important topic of meetings with Xi Jinping is the war in Ukraine.
Before his visit to Beijing, Macron had a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden. The two leaders declared their joint willingness to involve China to speed up the end of the war in Ukraine and participate in building a lasting peace in the region, the Elysee Palace said.
Since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine, China has been trying to maintain a neutral position, but does not directly condemn Moscow's actions.
