Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to Ukraine's claims on foreign property of the USSR

The foreign property of the former Soviet Union remains the property of the Russian Federation, this point is not subject to revision, despite the claims of Ukraine. This was said in a statement by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

According to her, Ukraine's claims about the foreign property of the USSR have no grounds. In 1991, the Soviet Union did not disappear as a subject of international law, but continued its legal personality in the state of the Russian Federation.

"Thus, the Russian Federation is the legal successor of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The status of the Russian Federation as a successor state of the USSR has been recognized by the international community and confirmed by the UN International Court of Justice," she noted.

Zakharova stressed that it was in this status that the Russian Federation undertook obligations to pay the external state debt of the USSR and, relying on this status, owns foreign property.

"It is strange that Ukrainian diplomats, trying to claim some property rights, do not recall the existing debt of the USSR, which Russia paid, without resorting to Ukraine and other Soviet republics. We consider this issue as finally settled, the results of the re-registration of Soviet foreign property to the Russian Federation is not subject to revision", - she added.

We shall remind you that earlier the Ukrainian Ambassador to Britain Vadym Pristayko said that Kiev demands from Russia to return one third of the foreign property of the USSR, because the documents on the recognition of debts of the Soviet Union for Russia were not ratified.

Previously, Britain identified 18 properties of the Russian Federation, which can be handed over to Ukraine.
