Charles Michel sees no problem with his resignation from the European Council in the summer, as his successor was to be elected anyway. This was reported by The Guardian.
Michel recently announced his readiness to step down if he is elected to the European Parliament. This has caused serious concern, as the leaders of the European Union must agree on a successor by July 1, when Hungary is due to take over the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
According to EU rules, in the absence of a permanent president of the European Council, the position is passed to the member state that holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
"I want to make it clear that in any case, a decision on my successor was to be made in June, and the parliamentary decision will be made in July, so it will be easy for the Council to make a decision assuming that my successor will take office. There are many tools to avoid Viktor Orban if there is political will," Michel said.
Earlier, we reported that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban could temporarily lead the European Council in the event of the resignation of the current president, Charles Michel. This was reported by Politico.
