Ukrainians who are liable for military service living abroad may be drafted into the army. Such scenarios are being discussed in Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, Welt reports.
Umerov suggested that next year men living abroad may be called up for military service. Ukrainians of military age between 25 and 60 in Germany and other countries may be asked to appear at the recruiting centers of the Armed Forces.
The Defense Minister spoke only of invitations. But, according to the German edition, Umerov made it clear that there could be sanctions if the request is not fulfilled.
"We are still discussing what will happen if they do not come voluntarily," Welt quoted Umerov as saying.
The Defense Minister emphasized that justice in the issue of mobilization is important. It is important how the military will be trained and equipped, where and when they will serve, and when they will be demobilized. According to Umerov, the recruits will have a choice depending on their abilities.
"We want justice for all, because it concerns our own country. We will send them invitations," he added.
The defense minister made it clear that he has no sympathy for those who refuse military service because of conscience: "This is not a punishment for defending your country and serving your country. It is an honor."
According to German publications, since February 24, 2022, 221,571 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 have arrived in Germany. Of these, 189,484 are currently in the country.
