Latvia bans Russian cars and prepares to confiscate them to Ukraine

The Latvian Saeima has adopted in the final reading amendments to the law on road traffic, which are recognized as urgent. They prohibit Russian vehicles from participating in the country's traffic. This was reported on the Saeima's website.

The amendments come into force on November 15. According to them, a vehicle with a Russian registration must be registered or taken out of Latvia no later than February 14 next year. After this period, it will be arrested, confiscated and transferred to Ukraine. Illegal driving of such a car will also be fined in the amount of 150 to 400 monetary units (one unit is five euros).

An exception is made only for cars crossing the territory of Latvia in transit. Moreover, such transit will be allowed only once, and the transit must be completed within 24 hours.

The participation of certain vehicles with Russian registration numbers in road traffic is allowed in cases where the car is owned or used by a person who has privileges and immunity in accordance with international norms binding on Latvia (diplomatic missions, international organizations, etc.). Documents confirming the existence of such circumstances are required.
