Arakhamia announces "showdowns" over controversial amendment to the law on politically exposed persons

The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Financial and Taxation Issues supported the wording of the draft law on the return of lifetime financial monitoring of politically exposed persons. However, this version contains an amendment that does not meet the requirements of the European Union.

Draft law No. 9269-d, for which the majority of the committee members voted, provides for the return of the indefinite status of a public figure after Ukraine becomes a member of the EU.

This draft law is an important condition for the International Monetary Fund to receive the third tranche at the end of the year.

However, an absurd amendment was introduced to the draft law, proposed by Maksym Buzhansky, a member of the "Servant of the People" faction.

David Arakhamia, head of the "Servant of the People" faction, has already announced his intention to deal with this decision of the committee.

"Today, the committee adopted a version of the law on politically exposed persons that does not meet the requirements of our EU partners. This is unacceptable to us, and I will initiate a second meeting of the committee to revise the draft law for the second reading," Arakhamia said.

Likewise, Vitaliy Shabunin, head of the Anti-Corruption Center, noted that Buzhansky is well aware that Ukraine will not be able to join the EU with this amendment.

"In fact, this is the main goal of this tainted 'servant'," Shabunin said.
