The European Union has decided to increase duties on imports of Russian grain in order to adjust the Kremlin's revenues and prevent the destruction of the region's agricultural sector. This was reported by Bloomberg.
According to the report, tariffs on Russian and Belarusian grain will be increased from July 1, said the head of the EU trade mission, Valdis Dombrovskis.
It was also decided to fight the illegal export of Russian grain that was stolen from Ukrainian markets and sent to the territory of the EU.
The EU statement published on Thursday said that the new rules provide for an increase in duties on grains and oilseeds from Russia and Belarus to a level that would effectively stop imports of these products.
Last year, Russia supplied the EU with 4.2 million tons of grains and oilseeds, but this amount is only a small fraction of the EU's total imports.
