The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (UNHRM) stated that over the past 500 days, three times more civilians have died than in all the previous eight years of hostilities in eastern Ukraine.
This was reported in the press release of the MMPLU published on Friday.
As noted, HMRC was able to confirm the death of more than 9,000 civilians, including more than 500 children, since the Russian attack on February 24, 2022, but warned that the actual number of casualties could be much higher.
"Today we mark another sad milestone in the war, which continues to result in terrible civilian casualties in Ukraine," said Deputy Head of the Military Intelligence Service, Noelle Calhoun, on the 500th day since the start of Russia's large-scale invasion.
MMPLU noted that the total monthly number of dead and injured persons decreased at the beginning of this year compared to 2022, but in May and June their average number increased again.
The UNRWA recalled the latest deadly attack on June 27, when 13 civilians, including four children, were killed in the evening by a rocket attack on a busy shopping district in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine. Among those killed in this attack in Kramatorsk was Ukrainian writer and human rights defender Victoria Amelina, who died of her injuries earlier this week.
Just a few days later, another rocket attack took the lives of 10 civilians in Lviv. During these two weeks, the number of civilian casualties is one of the highest since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the statement noted.
"The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission, which has been working in Ukraine since 2014, said that over the past 500 days, three times more civilians have died than in all the previous eight years of hostilities in eastern Ukraine," the press release states.
As previously reported, the United Nations confirmed information about the death of more than 9,000 people in Ukraine and the injury of more than 15,000 people as a result of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
