The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova on Wednesday - after a massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine led to blackouts in almost the entire territory of Moldova.
According to the authorities, the vast majority of the country's population centers were left without power supply due to an emergency shutdown of the power supply system. In the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, public transport stopped, traffic lights did not work. About an hour later, power was restored.
The self-proclaimed Transnistria also remained without power.
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, lashed out at the Russian authorities with sharp criticism on Facebook. "We cannot trust a regime that leaves us in darkness and cold, that deliberately kills people out of a simple desire to keep other peoples in poverty and humiliation. No matter how difficult it is now, our only path, the future path of the Republic of Moldova, must lead to side of the free world," Sandu wrote. She also promised that all technical problems will be solved and the light will return to the houses.
Last time, electricity in Moldova was cut off on November 15, during a previous massive Russian attack on energy facilities in neighboring Ukraine, from where Moldova receives part of its electricity.
Mass protests by the opposition, which blames the country's pro-European government for the energy crisis and price hikes, have been taking place in Chisinau in recent weeks. The authorities believe that the organizers of the protests, including billionaire Ilan Shor, who is abroad, are connected to Russia.
