The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, met with the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday, October 11. This was reported on the IAEA's Twitter page.
"Director General Grossi met today with Russian President Putin as part of the IAEA's efforts to prevent a nuclear accident in Ukraine," the message reads.
The meeting emphasized the urgent need to create a security guard zone around the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The IAEA also reported that last week Grossi met with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv. Grossi plans to meet with him again later.
"Now, more than ever, in these extremely difficult times, a safety zone must be established around the ZNPP. We cannot afford to waste any more time. We must do everything in our power to avoid a nuclear accident," Grossi said.
During the meeting, the Russian president said that he "will be happy to discuss all issues of mutual interest."
"For example, what concerns the situation around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. In any case, we are open to this dialogue and are glad to see you," Putin said.
