The International Atomic Energy Agency's 35-nation board of governors on Friday approved the reappointment of Argentine Rafael Grossi for a second four-year term as the organization's director general, citing diplomats in a closed-door meeting, Reuters reported.
The decision was reportedly a formality as there were no bidders.
The IAEA's board approved his reappointment by acclamation, meaning no vote was held and no country objected, diplomats said. The decision is subject to approval by the IAEA General Conference, the annual meeting of all member states, which will take place in the fall.
It is expected that the general conference will approve it. Grossi's current term expires in December.
While in office, Grossi tried to agree on the creation of a protective zone around the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is occupied by the Russian Federation.
