The Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands that Hungary correct the lies about Ukraine in the geography textbook

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine requires Hungary to correct false information in the geography textbook for the eighth grade. This was stated by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oleg Nikolenko.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is aware of the situation with the geography textbook for the eighth grade in Hungary. Yesterday, Ukrainian diplomats held a meeting in the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, during which they emphasized the inadmissibility of presenting unreliable and distorted facts about Ukraine. We demand the correction of false information in the textbook as soon as possible," said Nikolenko.

WE reported on the eighth-grade geography textbook developed by the OFI state center, which is a mandatory textbook for Hungarian students.

The book has a section dedicated to Ukraine. As the journalists found out, the textbook was last updated on September 1, 2022. However, some elements on the page about Ukraine contain metadata dated 2019.

The textbook contains false facts about the history of Ukraine. For example, Hungarian authors seem to have deprived Ukraine of sovereignty over the Crimean mountains, writing that the Carpathians are the only mountains in Ukraine, "at the foot of which are located the historical Hungarian cities: Ungvar (Uzhgorod), Munkach (Mukachevo), Khust."
