EU cannot provide €5 billion in aid to Ukraine because of Hungary's position, - Borrell

Hungary is blocking the provision of military aid to Ukraine worth about 5 billion euros because it does not agree with the texts of the EU legal acts required for this. This was announced by EU High Representative Josep Borrell.

According to Ukrinform, Borrell explained that the adoption of legal acts must be unanimous by all EU members, and this is what is currently being hindered.

During a press conference after the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, Borrell noted that due to Budapest's insistence, no Hungarian contributions to the European Peace Fund are used for military aid to Ukraine, even non-lethal. To use the Fund's resources, decisions must be made by consensus.

In particular, seven legal acts must be adopted to provide assistance to Ukraine. Hungary has expressed disagreement with the texts of the documents, and they are still under consideration.

Borrell emphasized that a delay in the adoption of these acts could cost human lives and stressed the importance of understanding the weight of the issues that remain unresolved due to Hungary's disagreement.

The diplomat also noted that another legal act will be proposed that will allow the use of frozen Russian assets for military assistance to Ukraine. This document will be presented to the Coreper this week, and Borrell urged EU member states not to block its adoption.

Borrell emphasized that military aid to Ukraine should not be held hostage to other decisions that are not related to this issue, especially given the urgency of the situation.
