EU calls for dialogue to minimize risks amid tensions over Taiwan

The European Union urged Wednesday to resolve tensions surrounding U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan through dialogue and to keep open channels of communication with China to avoid miscalculations.

This was reported by Reuters.

"The EU is interested in preserving peace and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait," the EU speaker said.

"We encourage peaceful resolution of problems across the strait. Tensions should be resolved through dialogue. Appropriate channels of communication should be maintained to reduce the risks of miscalculation," the statement said.

The European Commission spokesman said the EU has a "clear one-China policy," recognizing the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate government of China, and pursuing "friendly relations and close cooperation with Taiwan."
