In Ukraine, about 270 thousand square kilometers need to be cleared of mines - Monastyrski

The demining needs 270 thousand square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, according to the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

"If we talk about the number, then today we understand that about 270 thousand square kilometers need to be demined. This includes the occupied territories," the head of the Ministry, Denis Monastyrsky, said on Friday during an all-Ukrainian telethon.

According to him, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine directs the units of the State Emergency Situations Service of Ukraine to conduct the primary operational demining within a year. "In simple words, the road between settlements should be demined, the settlement, the adjacent territories, as well as the territories around the settlements should be completely demined. But full demining, which includes roads, forest belts, water bodies, will take years", - stressed Monastyrsky.

As for the rest on the beaches, the minister warned that it is dangerous to swim in most water bodies in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv regions because of the presence of explosive devices. According to him, local authorities themselves determine whether it is allowed to swim in certain reservoirs. He also stressed that special professional equipment is needed to examine bodies of water, which is scarce in Ukraine, and urged Ukrainians not to visit bodies of water for the time being because of the mine danger.

"We turned to our international partners-colleagues from the European Union. They will help us both with teams that will come from abroad and directly with equipment for such mine clearance," said Monastyrsky.
