The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) has agreed on steps to open electricity trade with Ukraine, the European Commission said, welcoming the decision.

"The European Commission welcomes the progress in the integration of Ukraine and Moldova into the European electricity market, confirmed today by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). Following an emergency synchronization of the two networks on March 16, which ensured security of supply for the two interconnected power systems, transmission system operators from continental Europe agreed on steps to open electricity trade with Ukraine, while ensuring the region's energy security," the statement said.

The Ukrainian electricity transmission system operator Ukrenergo and the electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) of continental Europe will work together to meet these conditions, it said.

It is noted that Ukrenergo also became an observer member of ENTSO-E.

"Another important step! I welcome the decision of the European TSOs to open electricity trade with Ukraine after the successful emergency synchronization in March. The process will be gradual and will be carried out on clear terms agreed upon with Ukraine," European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simmons wrote on Twitter.
