The European Commission does not rule out further sanctions against Russia because of the war in Ukraine, but is not currently considering imposing an embargo on Russian gas. This was stated by European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni, La Stampa reported.
He believes that although the war in Ukraine will not be won with sanctions, the six packages of EU sanctions will have a devastating effect on the Russian economy and power.
"The official position of the European Commission is that no sanctions are ruled out. But at the moment we are not talking about a gas blockade. The question is to hit Russia, but in a way that does not damage us too much," he said.
Gentiloni explains that war has a price.
"Beware: no one thought to defeat it with sanctions, because Russian President Vladimir Putin will want to get out of it only through negotiations that will allow him to avoid having to say that he has been defeated," the European commissioner stressed.
