This was stated by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen at the summit of the EU, which takes place on May 30-31, reports the website Obozrevatel.
"We once again discussed an issue that still remains open. This is the sixth package of sanctions against Russia. The work has been hard and successful... We have not yet come to the end [of the negotiations], and according to my expectations, a decision will follow not within the next 48 hours, but after this [deadline]," von der Leyen said.
She also outlined some of the most important topics on the summit's agenda. Besides sanctions against Russia, these are also aid to Ukraine, food security and investments in European defense.
"We have only one key to success. This is solidarity with Ukraine and the unity of the European Union," von der Leyen stressed. That said, pipeline oil from Russia may not fall under the EU embargo. It is about the oil that Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic receive through the Russian pipeline Druzhba. Such a decision could be a compromise. After all, the EU has not been able to agree on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia for almost a month because of resistance from Hungary and other active consumers of Russian energy resources.
