EU begins work on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia with an "oil option" - Lithuanian Foreign Minister

The European Commission has begun work on new sanctions against Russia with an "oil option," Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said before the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Monday.

"The European Commission has made it very clear that it is starting work on the 6th package with 'oil options.' That means the work of reaching a consensus has already begun," Landsbergis said.

The European Union announced and implemented the fifth package of sanctions against russia in response to its war against Ukraine, which included an embargo on russian coal imports and new sanctions on one of russia's largest banks, VTB, among others. However, restrictive measures on oil imports, in particular, are still being worked on, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
