Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated the need for new security guarantees that would work every time the world is threatened. He urged Japan to join the development of new instruments that would work preventively and against any aggression.
The Ukrainian head of state said this in an address to the Japanese parliament.
"We must work out new security guarantees so that we can act preventively every time there is a threat to peace. Can this be done on the basis of existing structures? After a war like this, definitely not. We need to create new instruments, new safeguards that will work preventively and strongly against any aggression. Japan's leadership can be indispensable in developing them. I offer this to you, so that the world can feel again confidence in what tomorrow will be, "- said Zelensky.
Also, the President of Ukraine called on international organizations to reform. He is sure that international institutions must become more effective.
"International institutions have not worked...the UN, the Security Council, they need to be reformed, they need an injection of honesty to become effective, to really decide and really influence, not just discuss," said Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian president also urged Tokyo to take a leadership role in uniting Asia to force Russia to stop the invasion.
"I am grateful to your country for its principled stance at such a historic moment, real help to Ukraine. You were the first in Asia to start pushing Russia really hard to restore peace, to support sanctions against Russia. I urge you to continue to do this, I urge you to unite the efforts of Asian countries, your partners, to stabilize the situation so that Russia would seek peace and stop the tsunami of its brutal invasion of Ukraine," Zelensky said.
He also called on Japan to impose an embargo on trade with Russia and to stop Japanese companies from operating in the Russian market.
He also asked for tougher sanctions against Russia.
