Borrell to Russia: Aggression against Ukraine will have large-scale consequences

The head of European diplomacy Josep Borrel, after his visit to Donbas, made a statement about the build-up of Russian troops near Ukraine's borders. He warned that any aggression would have large-scale consequences and a huge price.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the broadcast of Borrel's briefing.

"Now the conflict is on the brink. Tension is now building up, even with regard to European security. Russia is building up troops and weapons along the Ukrainian border in an unusual way," he said.

The EU diplomatic chief noted that during the first meeting between the U.S. and Russian presidents in Geneva, there was an impression that they were building lines of communication, but now the world is seeing a build-up of Russian troops as well as putting forward "security guarantees."

"The issue of European and Ukrainian security is one that concerns Ukrainians and Europeans. That is why we are here today to mark on the EU's full support for Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity... We are here to work together to de-escalate the situation," Borrell said

The diplomat noted that the main goal today is to reduce tension around Ukraine.

"Our main goal is to reduce tension. This should take place both through negotiations and through firm statements regarding support for Ukraine... Any military aggression against Ukraine will have large-scale consequences and a huge cost," he added.

As a reminder, NATO will hold an urgent meeting in the coming days to discuss the situation on Ukraine's borders.
