Head of EU diplomacy: no decision on sanctions against Russia will be made today

EU foreign ministers will not take specific decisions today regarding sanctions against the Russian Federation for its aggression against Ukraine. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel told reporters Monday morning.

"While we continue to build up a strong package of sanctions, but nothing concrete will be taken today. There is a process. There is a process going on. Rest assured that it will be ready when it's needed. But we're not going to announce any specific measures," Borrell said.

The EU High Representative was asked about the possibility of disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT payment system. He replied that "the process of deciding on sanctions is complicated.

He noted that the decision must be taken by all the EU member-states. Borrell also noted close coordination with allies, in particular with the U.S., with Canada and the UK.
