EU must be ready for tougher sanctions in case of another Russian aggression - Denis Shmygal at the meeting with Josep Borrel

During a working visit to Brussels Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal discussed security issues with the High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrel.

Head of the Government stressed that this meeting is an important signal of the European Union's support of Ukraine against the background of another aggravation of the security situation by Russia, in particular by using Belarus to escalate the situation with migrants on the border with Poland.

"The EU should be ready for tougher sanctions in case of another Russian aggression. Sectoral sanctions are the most effective means. We hope for a decision of the European Council on their next extension," said Denis Shmygal.

Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine considers the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border in the context of Russia's strategy to weaken the European Union.

"We appreciate the EU's readiness to help Ukraine. Coordination of our actions is a guarantee of preventing the use of Ukrainian territories to destabilize the situation in the EU," said the head of the government.

Denis Shmygal and Josep Borrell also discussed possible dates of the eighth Ukraine-EU Association Council and expectations of the sixth Eastern Partnership summit.
