In a recent phone conversation, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested to his American counterpart Joe Biden to send Western military instructors to Ukraine. This was reported by Politico with reference to two unnamed interlocutors familiar with the content of the conversation between the leaders.

According to them, the American president rejected Macron's proposal. Biden expressed concern about the potential consequences of sending troops from any NATO country to a place where they could be on the line of fire and lead to an escalation of the conflict.

The call ended without any decision.

The publication writes that the White House considers Macron “a kind of wild card,” but he and Biden “remarkably trust each other,” and their wives get along well. 

The article says that it was Macron who lobbied for sending coalition troops to Ukraine to train the military long before any consensus was reached on such a move.
