The US Democratic and Republican parties have failed in negotiations on US border security. This threatens to block a new aid package for Ukraine, NBC News reports.
Bipartisan talks on border policy on December 1 reportedly stalled due to deep disagreements between lawmakers.
Republicans have vowed to cancel the aid package to Ukraine unless Democrats agree to strengthen US asylum and parole laws in immigration proceedings.
One of the Democratic aides said that his political force was supposedly ready to compromise on the border, but that Republicans insisted on "extreme policies."
The White House's position was also criticized by House Speaker Mike Johnson, who accused US President Joe Biden of ignoring Republican "concerns."
"There is no clear strategy for Ukraine, no path to resolving the conflict, and no plan to adequately ensure accountability for the aid provided by American taxpayers. Meanwhile, the administration has consistently ignored the disaster on our own border. House Republicans have decided that any additional national security package must begin at our own border," Johnson said.
