The EU wants to strengthen sanctions against relatives of Russian oligarchs - Bloomberg

The European Union intends to create a clearer legal framework for imposing sanctions against family members of Russian oligarchs after an EU court overturned restrictions against the mother of PIC "Wagner" founder Yevgeny Prigozhin.

 This is reported by Bloomberg.

The European External Action Service has informed the EU member states that it will soon submit a relevant legislative act.

The proposal for a clear mechanism gained traction after the European Court overturned sanctions against Prigozhin's mother. However, despite her court victory, she returned to the EU's list from March 13 after the bloc reviewed information on those who had been sanctioned or took into account that some of them had died.

The purpose of the proposal is to ensure that there is a very strong evidence base showing that some family members received undue benefits from the sanctioned oligarchs and may have helped them evade sanctions. The proposal establishes the criteria and legal framework that will allow sanctions to be applied to family members of individuals.

It will be recalled that in March the European Union court canceled part of the sanctions against Violetta Prigozhina, the mother of the founder of PVK "Wagner". Later, the EU explained its decision.
