The advance units of the AFU are within sniper shot, that is, about a kilometer from the first suburbs of Kherson. But the fighting for the city will be tough.
This is reported by The Economist.
An unnamed Ukrainian military intelligence official also said that the next two weeks will be even more interesting. It is reported that the supply of more Western missile systems could fundamentally change the situation, but so far only a number of American M777 howitzers have been sent to the southern direction.
According to the newspaper's sources, the Russian military is constantly improving its fortifications, saturating the defense line with long-term firing points made of concrete.
The Ukrainian army's offensive is also not helped by the open landscape of the Kherson region, where the troops are vulnerable to artillery strikes. In addition, so far there is no threefold advantage of the AFU in manpower and equipment in the southern direction, which is necessary for a successful offensive.
Meanwhile, Natalia Humenyuk, head of the press center of the Defense Forces in the south of Ukraine, said at a briefing that the information that our fighters are within a kilometer of the suburbs of Kherson is untrue. Such statements only harm the military operation and disorient civilians.
According to Gumenyuk, information about the advance of our fighters can only be commented on by the military, because such statements not only mislead people, but also generally harm the military operation.
"First, it does not correspond to reality (information that our military is already a kilometer away from the suburbs of Kherson - ed.), and second, it disorients our people, the local population, it harms not only the military operation, but also the image of those who state it," Gumenyuk noted.
We shall remind you that high-ranking US officials believe that Russia does not have enough forces to fully control the occupied territory of Kherson Region.
