On Monday the royal park in Westminster - Green Park - held ceremonial salvos from 41 cannons in honor of the 70th anniversary of the accession of British Queen Elizabeth II to the throne, reports the TV channel Sky News.

 

A detachment of the Royal Mounted Artillery took part in the cannon salute.

 

According to the TV channel, a gun salute was also held in Edinburgh.

 

According to a Sky News correspondent, the military involved in the salute groups had been preparing the gala event since 04:00 Monday.

 

The shots during the salute were fired from World War I guns. The same guns were used during the mourning salute in memory of King George VI in 1952, as well as during the coronation salute for Elizabeth II.

 

Sky News recalls that the platinum anniversary of Elizabeth II on the British throne was celebrated on February 6. Usually the gun salute takes place on solemn anniversaries of the royal family. However, according to tradition, if the anniversary falls on a Sunday, the cannon salute is held a day later - on Monday.

 

Remarkably, the queen, speaking on the eve of the 70th anniversary celebration on the throne, for the first time publicly supported Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

 

Queen Elizabeth officially declared her desire to award Camilla the title of Queen Consort. The monarch's official statement was published in a number of foreign media outlets, including People.

 

The Duchess of Cornwall will receive her title when Prince Charles ascends the throne.

 

The 70th anniversary on the British throne is the first anniversary that the British queen has spent without her husband Philip, who died in April 2021 at the age of 99.
