Ukrainians with dual citizenship will not be allowed to go abroad and may be mobilized - US Embassy in Kyiv

Holders of dual citizenship will not be allowed to travel abroad and may be mobilized. This was reported by the US Embassy in Kyiv, warning men with dual citizenship that it is better not to go to Ukraine.

“On June 1, Ukraine abolished the ‘residence abroad’ exception, which previously allowed some Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 to leave the country. Following this change, American-Ukrainian dual citizens, including those living in the United States, will no longer be able to leave the country,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy claims that it was possible to leave before.

“Previously, dual American-Ukrainian citizens in this group could enter and then leave Ukraine if they deregistered their residence in Ukraine and registered their residence in the United States. According to our information, this exception was canceled on June 1,” the embassy explains.

It emphasizes that the embassy is “limited in its ability to influence Ukrainian legislation, including the application of martial law and the law on mobilization to Ukrainian citizens.”

“If you are in Ukraine and cannot leave the country, shelter in place and obey all local orders. If you are not currently in Ukraine, we strongly advise that male US citizens between the ages of 18 and 60 who also have Ukrainian citizenship refrain from any travel to Ukraine,” the statement reads.

It is worth noting that dual citizenship is prohibited in Ukraine. In addition, according to the law, if Ukrainian citizens have a passport of another country, they are considered exclusively as citizens of Ukraine and are subject to the rights and obligations of Ukrainian citizens.
